Garden Tiller (Front & Rear Tine)
Tillers make short work of creating new beds and borders and turning over vegetable gardens each spring. They’re also ideal for working in soil amendments, such as compost or peat moss, over large areas.
When considering purchasing a tiller, keep the following in mind:
- Weight and horsepower. Large, powerful tillers (those with 6 hp and up) are ideal for tilling large gardens - with more than 5,000 square feet. However, they can weigh as much as 200 pounds and often need a trailer to be transported any distance. Also, the largest tillers require a lot of strength to handle well. A garden under 5,000 square feet should do fine with a 4- to 6- hp tiller, which is lighter and easier to handle. Then there are the smallest, so-called “mini” tillers or cultivators that you can lift with one hand. These are best for keeping down weeds between rows and other light tilling rather than creating new beds.
- Rear tine vs. front tine. Rear-tine tillers are increasingly popular because the motor powers the wheels in front, which pull the tiller forward. They are powerful and a good choice for hardpan and stony soils. Front0tine tillers have rear-mounted wheels, which allow you to easily push the tiller from one location to another.
- Tilling depth and width. Check the tines to see how deep the machine can till. If you’re creating shrub or perennial borders, you’ll want to till several inches deep, at least. Working in soil amendments or turning over a vegetable garden requires less depth. Also check how wide a swath the tiller covers; wide swaths mean fewer passes to cover an area.
- Gas or electric? Gas engines tend to be more powerful but tricker to start. (Look for an electric starter.) Electric tillers are quiet and light but tend to be less powerful and have a cord to deal with.
- Your soil. Tillers work best in soil that is at least moderately soft when moist and free from large stones.
