Drive-By Backyard: Waterwise entrance yard and patio

June 30, 2023

Driving across the Delwood neighborhood in East Austin final week I noticed this engaging waterwise entrance yard. An enormous crape myrtle shades one facet of the midcentury-style residence, sheltering a small patio beneath its branches. On the sunny facet, Mexican feathergrass, large hesperaloe, firecracker fern, and fall aster get pleasure from a reasonably open placement, mulched with gravel.

A driveway of alternating concrete strips and gravel permits rainwater to percolate by means of. Within the slim facet yard, a tall hedge of ‘Will Fleming’ yaupon, properly pruned, offers privateness and enclosure.

A curved path of concrete pavers meanders below the crape myrtle to the avocado-green door. Within the shade, dwarf Texas palmetto, lamb’s ears, and cast-iron plant shrug off warmth or chilly.

Unfastened gravel — not decomposed granite — means fewer weeds. And I like the concrete circle that delineates a easy gravel patio with two benches close to the door. The proficient Casey Boyter designed this pretty house. Take a look at this different backyard in her portfolio for extra inspiration.

And across the block…

As I drove off and rounded the block, I noticed these cool cats in one other yard: a patch of shade-wearing prickly pear! Does something sum up a scorching Texas summer season higher than this?
