The Guangzhou China: Guangzhou Backyard, which took dwelling a gold medal and the award for Finest in Present on the 2021 RHS Chelsea Flower Present, has been rebuilt on the College of Bristol’s Botanic Backyard.
The backyard, designed by Tub-based observe Grant Associates director Peter Chmiel and affiliate director Chin-Jung Chen, was gifted to Bristol by town of Guangzhou – the 2 cities have been twinned since 2001.
Chmiel and Chin-Jung have been joined on the unveiling by the College’s Botanic Backyard Curator, Nicholas Wray, who shared perception on how the backyard has been tailored to its new South Western dwelling.

Impressed by town of Guangzhou, the unique backyard featured quite a few planting species and aquatic designs, which aligned with Chelsea’s first autumnal present in its 108-year historical past.

Backyard Curator, Wray provides: “The plant combine from the Chelsea Flower Present Backyard was not relocated to Bristol as among the semi-mature bushes have been over a ton in weight. As an alternative, the planting has been reimagined to characteristic vegetation totally Chinese language in origin. We hope the backyard can be loved and encourage guests for a few years to come back.”
Workers on the Botanic Backyard have been propagating vegetation from the backyard’s Chinese language plant collections to create a planting design that displays the looks of the sub-tropical flora of Guangzhou.
